A series of fourteen films based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories were released between 1939 and 1946; the British actors Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce played Holmes and Dr. John Watson, respectively. These films have been digitally remastered and uploaded for free on Youtube and I can think of nothing better to watch on cold winter nights when the wind is rattling the windows while the crackling fire casts mysterious shadows on the wall. Below I have complied three of my favourites: The House of Fear, The Scarlet Claw and of course, The Hound of the Baskervilles.
The House of Fear
Holmes is visited by an insurance agent with a strange tale. Seven single men, calling themselves "The Good Comrades", live together in the remote Scottish castle of Drearcliffe House. Recently one of the "Good Comrades" received a strange message, an envelope containing nothing but seven orange pips. He is found murdered the very same night.
The Scarlet Claw
When a gentlewoman is found dead, the villagers blame a supernatural monster. But Sherlock Holmes, who gets drawn into the case from nearby Quebec, suspects a human murderer.
The hound of the Baskervilles
Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson investigate the legend of a supernatural hound, a beast that may be stalking a young heir on the fog-shrouded moorland that makes up his estate.
